To offer therapy from licensed/certified physical and occupational therapists using the horse as a tool to develop strength, balance, posture, muscle tone moderation (relaxation or increased tone), motor planning, body awareness, task focus and confidence.
Our founder, Dawn Speece, started Focus Hippotherapy in 1993, a program that links horses with physical and occupational therapies to serve children with special needs. Dawn received her Bachelor’s degree in Allied Health with a Certificate in Physical Therapy in 1975 from The Ohio State University.
Dawn has provided physical therapy services for students in the Mahoning County Schools since 1989. She was an Autism Scholarship Provider for 3 years and a 4-H equine advisor for 8 years. She has worked closely with the Physical Therapy program and Youngstown State University on case studies and research involving hippotherapy.
